During her sophomore year of high school, Jessi was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis (JA). Due to the severity of her illness, she had to endure chemotherapy treatments and lengthy hospital stays. Her dream to go to college seemed like it would never come true. But Jessi persevered; she would not allow her condition to prevent her from getting a college education. She applied to Boise State University and was elated the day she found out she was accepted.
However, getting accepted was only the first step. With the high cost of college and being an out-of-state student, the Jeffrey Gottfurcht Children’s Arthritis Foundation (JGCAF) stepped in to help. “We wanted Jessi to be able to focus on school and the college experience and not have to get a job,” commented Jeff Gottfurcht, founder of the organization. ”It was the pleasure of the entire JFCAF team to help Jessi realize her dream.”
Leaving California for the first time in her life, and beginning this new journey is an extra special experience for Jessi, as her challenges are unique to most college bound students. “It is an honor for us to have the resources to help Jessi further her education and allow her the opportunity to get her degree,” said Jeff. “This is a dream that will truly last forever, and that’s what our organization is all about – changing the lives of families with children who have arthritis.”

A recent article published in the Journal of Pain Research, indicates that regular practice of yoga may decrease pain in women with fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia is a chronic disease causing muscle, connective tissue and joint pain and fatigue. It is also known that fibromyalgia sufferers produce insufficient amounts of cortisol, a natural steroid in the body that helps to fight inflammation. In 2004, the American College of Rheumatology reported that approximately one in 50 Americans has fibromyalgia, and that between 80 and 90 percent of those who suffer from the disease are women.
Unfortunately there are no specific tests to determine if a patient has fibromyalgia. And because the symptoms are similar to many other serious illnesses, the disease is often misdiagnosed.
The recent study posted in the Journal of Pain Research was conducted by the Psychology Department at York University in Toronto, Canada. 22 women with fibromyalgia were asked to take 75-minute Hatha yoga classes twice per week for 8 consecutive weeks. Hatha practice was chosen because it is a more gentle form of yoga, which can be modified to accommodate physical limitations, such as those that may occur from fibromyalgia pain. Classes included a variety of postures, breathing exercises and a brief meditation.
Participants were given questionnaires about their levels of pain before, during and after the study, and salivary samples of cortisol were collected 3 times per day for each participant for 2 days before and after the study. In addition, participants were asked to keep a journal of their physical and emotional experiences throughout the study.
The results of the study showed an improvement in all levels of pain as well as psychological variables including pain acceptance, feelings of helplessness and mindfulness. Most importantly, cortisol levels increased significantly during the 8-week yoga practice. An increase in cortisol improves the body’s ability to reduce the inflammation that causes pain. This suggests that both the physical movements and mindfulness that comes with Hatha yoga practice benefit women who are suffering from fibromyalgia pain.
It would be beneficial for further studies to be conducted with a larger sampling of participants and longer period of yoga practice, to confirm the encouraging findings of this study. In the mean time, if you or someone you know has fibromyalgia, taking a yoga class might just be beneficial.
